Local Resident Launches NEMO Charity on the Gloucester Road

On Saturday 12th February, newly established charity NEMO launched their art exhibition on the Gloucester Road, to raise awareness of a rare but devastating genetic disorder known as Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP) throughout the UK and internationally.
St Andrews resident Lizzie Coles founded the charity after her god-daughter was diagnosed with the condition. She also organised the event and after much hard work was delighted with the launch day, “It is amazing how much interest there is in the exhibition and in the work of NEMO – it’s really gratifying.

Lizzie would like to thank the Gloucester Road traders who have already shown their support to the charity. The Robin Hood Retreat supplied food and wine and Sairz Beauty Salon and Number 10 Cafe Bar, have lent the charity the shop furnishings.
Local artists exhibited paintings, pots and jewellery which sold well on the first day, with 20% of the proceeds going towards NEMO’s work with the families and sufferers of this debilitating condition.

Singer and acoustic guitarist Julie Baker entertained passers-by and visitors outside the shop on The Promenade, where the launch event was professionally staged in a remarkably short space of time – the venue having only just become available.
Later in the afternoon, the highly colourful Ambling Band brass ensemble played outside the shop forecourt, attracting a large crowd on the pavement and into the exhibition.

The exhibition continues until March 18th 2011 (possibly longer) at No 2 The Promenade – the shop next to the Prom music bar on Gloucester Road. I popped down to the venue this afternoon and there is a wonderful selection of art on display. Lizzie is passionate about raising awareness of this terrible genetic disorder and is bursting with energy to drive the charity forward. Watch this space for further events and fundraising activities. The exhibition is also looking for new artists to get involved, in particular Jewellers so please do get in touch if you are interested in securing a space in this wonderful location.

If you would like to find out more about this condition or make a much needed donation please contact Lizzie on the e-mail below, or pop in and see her at the shop she will make you feel most welcome. It is open Mon – Wed 11-5, Thurs – 11-8, Fri – Sat 11-5, Sun 11-4
