Welly Toddlers Remember the True Spirit of ChristmasDecember 18th, 2012
This is a lovely story. I was contacted in early December by a parent whose child attends the Welly Pre-School (based at Horfield Parish Church Hall), with news of a Christmas Giving event that the Toddler Group were organising.
To encourage the children to remember the true spirit of Christmas and to make them think about people other than themselves the Little Wellies proposed for the children to donate new toys to the Salvation Army Christmas Present appeal. Each year the Salvation Army in association with Social Services go out and give new Christmas gifts to children under care that would otherwise not be given presents.
The thought of young people not receiving anything at Christmas is something that struck a cord with everyone that was told about the scheme. I think it was a fantastic idea to pause and remember others when we have so much.
The project was two fold – on December 5th the Welly Toddlers worked with local business Rimando’s with a ‘Giving Day’. People were invited to come along to the Cafe on the Gloucester Road and the business kindly offered free soft play to children that had donated something. This could either be a new gift for the Salvation Army appeal or pre-loved items that they were collecting to donate to the STEP’s Charity Shop on Zetland Road (who suandpport children with life limiting illnesses). It was a great day to attend an impressive amount of books, toys and clothes were collected!
I was pleased to be invited to the Toddler Group on December 11th to witness the children handing over the 200 plus new gifts that they had collected.
Major Tracey Mountford from the Salvation Army was delighted to accept the generous donation, she told me, “It is wonderful that the Welly Pre-School have considered children who are less fortunate at this special time of year”. Tracey went on to tell me it was an extremely busy time of year for the Salvation Army with various appeals going and their bands attending events. The toys collected from the toddlers were going to be distributed the very next day.
Well done Welly Pre-School and thank you to all that donated. Organisers of the group and been overwhelmed with the response and hope to make the donations an annual event. www.horfieldwellypreschool.org.ukTags: Bishopston, Bishopston Matters, Bishopston Voice, Christmas, Horfield Parish Church, Horfield Welly Pre-School, presents, Rimando's, Salvation Army, STEP's Charity, Welly Toddlers Back to news
