A plea from the Gloucester Road Traders Association

At an open meeting of the Gloucester Road Traders Association on July 6th 2011 there was a discussion about the latest proposal for yet another high street chain to move onto the Gloucester Road.

Traders and local residents alike value the variety of independent shops on the Gloucester Road and many are opposed to any further expansion of corporate chains because it will undermine the viability of independent shops and make the Gloucester Road like all the other chain store dominated high street. There is a real concern that the plan for Costa Coffee to move in to 14 Gloucester Road on the Promanade, hot on the heels of Sainsburys will seriously threaten many of the independent traders, who in turn may be faced with closure.

Members of the traders committee are currently in discussions with council officials and local councillors and are calling on them to use local authority powers to prevent any further corporate expansion, which many fear will be the death knell of the Gloucester Road as we know it.

There are petitions in many of the shops on the Gloucester Road which traders and local residents alike are being encouraged to sign.

Thank you for your support.
