Wind band for seniors
December 28th, 2014In January 2015 a local wind group will be restructured to cater for the needs of retired people. Its aim will be to enable them to improve their playing skills in a group-friendly atmosphere.
Stage one of the project will be to recruit members who have had basic wind instrument tuition. That may be two or more years in a band-class or at school or lessons with a tutor. Under Chris Harris, who is an experienced and well qualified tutor, they will be introduced to the essential of band playing via music pieces specially arranged for the task in hand as well as specifically prepared exercises and studies.
After an appropriate period the group will move to stage two and will endeavour to arrange daytime performances at residential homes or retired person’s clubs etc.
The new group will be appended to Westerly Showband – Training, which is in fact a mixed-aged group that has already run successfully for several years. It success is probably due to its belief in a group-support system underpinned by sound methodology.
The group meets every Thursday in Kingswood Library at 7.30; the new class start on 29th January 2015. Prospective members are invited to come along on the previous Thursday (22nd January.) and see what the group has achieved so far and to get a general feel of things without making a commitment.
