Top marks for Bishop Road Primary School

Bishop Road Primary School has received the highest grading possible from government inspectors, Ofsted, in their report published today.

Awarding the 720-pupil north Bristol school an overall ‘outstanding’ judgement, during their visit last month, inspectors also found it to be an outstanding school in 27 separate measurements.

Inspectors praised it for achieving excellent results for both academic achievements and the personal development of all pupils, including those who may have special needs or are learning English. Pupil assessment, inspiring teaching, excellent behaviour and an innovative curriculum were also singled out for recognition.

Head teacher, Gillian Powe, said: “I believe firmly in letting the report speak for itself. I am enormously proud to be head teacher of this school and to receive such a positive outcome from Ofsted is a huge boost to the entire team who work here at our school.

“It is our goal to put every child at the centre of every decision we make and every development we implement and I am delighted to see the dedication of the teachers, our parents and carers, our children and our governors reflected in this inspection. I am particularly grateful to all the pupils and staff who welcomed the inspectors into their classrooms and spoke to them about their experiences of the school so openly.”

Chair of governors, Mark Worsley, added: “I am delighted with the result of the Ofsted inspection. All inspections are tough and this inspection was no different. The result reflects the very hard work that goes every day into giving the children at Bishop Road a challenging, rewarding and exciting experience at school. To be awarded an outstanding rating is testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of the head teacher and staff, the governing body, the parent body and, of course, the children. It is a great honour to be the chair of governors at such a very fine school.”

Bishop Road Primary was rated ‘good’ in its last inspection in 2007.

Executive Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Clare Campion-Smith, said: “Bishop Road is an excellent example of a large school that is also a very successful school. The school caters for the needs of the whole child.  They were the first Bristol school to take on four reception classes in 2009 and clearly standards were not compromised. This is a tremendous result for the school and means we now have seventeen Bristol primary schools judged outstanding.”
