St Werburghs City Farm benefit from the recent Give & Gain Day
July 18th, 2011
Wholesale HR and Commercial Products’s Bristol teams went down to St Werburghs City Farm, a green oasis for all the city, in the eco part of town as part of Business in the Communitys Give & Gain Day 2011. It is a pretty large site, so they split into groups and got stuck into the well needed maintenance work
The whole team worked brilliantly together getting lots done; repainting animal pens, building and re staining fences around the farm. At the farms conservation site Boiling Wells, they cleared paths and reclaimed a large area of the site from under a blanket of bindweed and brambles. With this space cleared, the farm will be able to start using it as another outdoor education area and plant native species to increase the biodiversity of the site overall. They also renovated the community gardens, weeding, clearing and clipping!
Steph from the Farm said, “The team not only donated their time, but also made an invaluable contribution in the form of plants, materials and tools worth hundreds of pounds. This means that their generosity lasts much longer than the day they came. Several sets of tools mean we can cater for more volunteer groups. These have already been used by the newly started Wednesday volunteer maintenance group, who used them to plant the donated foxgloves and ferns and other native plants in the Boiling Wells site.
All in all, it felt like a really constructive and positive day and we look forward to working with groups like this again. This is one of the best volunteer groups we’ve ever had. So a massive thank you from all the St Werburghs City farm staff for all of your efforts and generosity!”
With the help of Matched Giving, the total cash they donated was £400. A big thank you to the businesses that supported the day: Riverside Garden Centre gave a 10% discount on the native plants needed. Scats Country Stores donated the equipment that enabled us to build a pen for the rabbits. Whitehall Garden Centre donated £270 worth of free plants – thanks to one of our RDs, Dave Snart who organised this.
